Dry Skin - Dealing With Eczema Rash Skin

Eczema can be differentiated into various categories – atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis and nummular dermatitis – and dry skin is a common feature in all these skin conditions.

If you are sure you are having either one of the skin conditions, then you may need to see a dermatologist for help in controlling your eczema. Your skin doctor may prescribe the following for your treatment;

Steroid Creams

Brand names like Westcort, Lidex, Topicort, and Cuteivate are strong prescription steroid creams that can help control your skin itchiness and inflammation. But be aware there’s a danger of these medicated cream “thinning” your skin.

Phototherapy

For severe cases, your doctor may recommend a dose of ultraviolet-B(UVB). This is an expensive treatment but able to alleviate atopic dermatitis. This treatment is not without its risks – skin cancer and premature skin aging, and that’s the reason why skin experts has advised against going for this treatment unless necessary.

Patch Test

If you eczema skin is non responsive to steroid and phototherapy treatment, your doctor may need to conduct a test to find out if your skin is allergic to certain substances. There are many things unknown to us that can trigger the eczema. This includes anything from those your touch – e.g grass – to the things you eat – e.g dairy products. As you can imagine, this is a highly time consuming task but it’s the only way to find what cause the mystery itch in your skin.

Prescription Drug

After conducting the patch test, your doctor may prescribe a stronger medicine such as Cyclosporine. It is one of the most powerful prescription drug used to treatment eczema. Considered a very high risk treatment option for the patient, side effects like kidney problems has been reported. That’s the reason why researchers are clamoring towards less risky and newer drugs like Gamma interferon.
